Stephanie's Winning Butterfly Story: For as long as memory will allow, I have been the greatest and hugest fan of Patti LaBelle. Although I am only 19 years old, my longing to hear a Patti tune defies my age. At the age of 5, I was already singing along to her songs before I even knew what in the world she was singing about. I just knew it sounded great! For example, “The Right Kind of Lover” was the very first song that I ever learned by Patti. I was given a walkman for one of my younger birthdays, and found an old “A-side, B-side” cassette tape with that song on it. I played it continuously for days and days. But when I learned the words, I flipped it over to the B-Side and sang along to the instrumental. To have an impact on such a young child is phenomenal, and Patti is the only musician I know that can do it that good!
I have always been ridiculed about my personality and the fact that this young teenager has such an old soul. Patti LaBelle was the very first concert I ever attended at age 10, and even then I was only a 5th grader going to see Patti. In 1999, I sat in the balcony of Arie Crown Theater at the edge of my seat as she belted each note, and kicked off each shoe until it hit the other side of the stage. Just recently, I saw her in concert for the 3rd time. She performed again at the Arie Crown Theater, March 28th of this year. There was no way I wasn’t at the edge of my seat this time either. Not only did she bring me complete joy with the bells of her voice, but she brought a certain happiness that you can only get from such a genuine and pure soul.
Miss Patti exudes such a vivacious vibe and character of spontaneity that I immediately fell in love with. The music that she produces is indescribable and I wouldn’t choose any other idol to model after. To have a dream of pursuing anything, even music if so desired, wouldn’t be too hard to obtain with direction and guidance from someone who is simply the best at it. Patti, I appreciate you from every word you speak to every song that you sing, and I can’t say thank you enough for being such a blessing in my life. Much love Patti!
